Fats and oils: consistently inconsistent
In modern-day monogastric animal production, fat and oils are playing a pivotal role as energy sources in high-performing diets because of their high caloric contribution, however, monitoring the quality of dietary lipids, as these are highly sensitive to oxidation, is often neglected. And in the feed formulation, usually is relied upon on table values for their metabolizable energy content, without considering the very high variability they can represent. Fats and oils are though the most expensive raw materials; they take a high share in total feed costs. Therefore, it is of the utmost importance to measure their oxidative quality and actual nutritive value, to ensure optimal quality of the diet and to formulate more accurately for the best impact on animal performance. To support the livestock industry in reaching this goal, Kemin Customer Laboratory Service has developed the Lipid Evaluation Test (LET), a unique and profound assessment of the real oxidative and nutritional status of fats and oils, enabling an accurate energy value estimation to increase feed formulation precision.
