Precision protein nutrition in poultry

Precision protein nutrition aims to improve the efficiency of dietary protein utilization by maximizing digestibility while reducing nutrient losses throughout the production cycle. Soybean meal remains the major protein source in poultry feeds, but its nutritional value is highly variable due to the presence of anti-nutritional factors such as trypsin inhibitors and soy antigens, which can impair digestive function, nutrient absorption, and gut health. This presentation reviews the impact of these anti-nutritional factors on protein digestibility and highlights nutritional strategies to mitigate their effects. Experimental results demonstrated that the Jefo Pro Solution can inactivate key soybean anti-nutritional factors, enhance ileal amino acid digestibility, and reduce the amount of undigested protein reaching the hindgut. Improved protein utilization was associated with better intestinal integrity, favorable modulation of gut microbiota, and improved broiler performance, even under nutritionally challenging feeding conditions. These findings illustrate how precision protein nutrition can contribute to optimizing feed efficiency, gut health, and poultry production sustainability.

Undigested protein: the hidden cost of swine production

Undigested dietary protein represents a hidden cost in swine production, as it may impair nutrient efficiency and gut health while increasing nitrogen and gaseous emissions. This presentation examines how improving protein digestibility can enhance amino acid availability and reduce the amount of protein reaching the hindgut. In vivo results showed that the Jefo Pro Solution increased the apparent ileal digestibility of crude protein by 4.7% and improved amino acid digestibility by an average of 3.2%. Additional trials indicated improvements in piglet digestive health, together with reductions in urinary and faecal nitrogen concentrations in growing-finishing pigs. Improved protein utilization was also associated with lower ammonia emissions and greater homogeneity of slaughter weight and carcass characteristics. Life-cycle assessment scenarios further suggested that this nutritional strategy could reduce the climate-change impact of swine feed by 11 to 17%, highlighting the potential of enhanced protein digestibility to support productive, economic and environmental efficiency.
