Dr. József Popp

Member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, University Professor

He graduated as an agricultural engineer from the University of Agricultural Sciences in Keszthely in 1979, and received a degree in economics from the University of Economics in 1984. He is a Candidate of Economic Sciences (MTA 1988), holds a doctorate in economics (Dr.sc. oec., Humboldt University Berlin, 1998), is a Doctor of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (MTA 2008), university professor (University of Debrecen, 2009), corresponding member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (2019) and full member of the Academy (2025).

He began his career at the Research Institute of Agricultural Economics in 1979, studied at Humboldt University in Berlin from 1984 to 1988, then taught and researched at the Technical University of Munich between 1988 and 1990. From 1990 to 1998 he worked as an accredited diplomat to the USA and Canada at the Hungarian Embassy in Washington, after which he became chief advisor at the Integration State Secretariat of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In 1999 he became scientific director and later deputy director-general of the Research Institute of Agricultural Economics.

Between 2009 and 2018 he worked at the University of Debrecen (university professor, vice-dean and head of the doctoral school). From 2018 to 2021 he was Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences at Szent István University and later at the Hungarian University of Agriculture and Life Sciences, as well as head of its doctoral school. Since 2021 he has been a lecturer and researcher at Neumann János University. He is also a professor at two foreign universities (WSB University, Poland, and the University of Johannesburg, South Africa).
